While I highly recommend the “Devil in the White City” tour, it’s really frustrating that about 99% of everything that was created for the exposition is already gone.

So the tour began with a slide show showing lots of pictures of the way things used to look back in the day. Then we started the bus portion of the tour, and as we got on the bus we each got a copy of this map to help us ground ourselves in the physical space.

A lot of the tour was very frustrating — “Here’s where the Midway used to be … Here’s where the agriculture building used to be …”

But that meant that we were comparatively VERY excited to go see the few things that still exist from that time, like the Palace of Fine Arts and the Wooded Island.
