Well, between the need to get chores done around the house and the lousy weather, I haven’t done anything exciting yet during my week off. Although I did make a delightful Chicken Paprika dinner tonight, so I guess it depends on what you mean by “exciting.” But I’m planning on going out tomorrow and bringing my camera along. It’s supposed to be very cold, so I’m choosing an indoor option of visiting the American Museum of Natural History. I want to visit my favorite areas of the museum, namely the dinosaurs and the gems/minerals/meteorites. It’s my favorite museum in New York City, yet I’ve never taken pictures there before. So this time I’ll be visiting armed with my camera and with the museum’s Explorer app that I just downloaded on my iPod Touch today.
And then afterwards I’ll be checking out some local hot chocolate options, of course 🙂
ETA (1/20/11): The American Museum of Natural History was a lot of fun. I got to check out a few of my favorite things, like the dinosaurs, the big blue whale, and lots of small shiny objects. Plus a few big shiny objects, as well …

Oh, the AMNH is the most awesome place! Cool/creepy. AND they have the most excellent gift shops! Speaking of creepy, have you ever read Relic by Douglas Preston? No Night At The Museum here. Ohhhh, the AMNH is all it’s stunning creepiness! You just KNOW those things move when you turn your back.

I agree with the cool/creepy aspect, and specifically it’s a lot DARKER than I remember. Which is very cool if you want to look at an exhibit that’s supposed to depict something that’s happening at night or deep under water (like the squid fighting the whale, for example). But it’s a drag if you’re trying to photograph those exhibits. Anyway, I spent just over three hours wandering around and taking pictures, and I just got home.
Now I’m having a Shackburger and a Salted Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate (Oh. My. God. This is the most awesome thing EVER), and then I’m going to go lie down for a while. My feet hurt, my back hurts, and my ears hurt from listening to hundreds of screaming children running around the dinosaur exhibits. Gah!
p.s. – I LOVE Relic with an all-consuming passion. In fact, I got hooked on the entire Agent Pendergast series, and they are some of the only books that I actually buy nowadays.
p.p.s. – More thoughts later. Kitty and I just polished off the Shackburger, so it’s time to lie down now.

A Salted Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate sounds absolutely sinful! And I used to love the Pendergast series, but I think it’s been a bit wobbly lately. The story line about the “niece” stinks. 😛
Saw an amazing review for something called Among Others by Jo Walton. Teen protagonist though it’s catalogued as adult – we do have a few copies. Have you heard of it?

Yes, the niece is not nearly as cool as Pendergast is. One can only hope she’ll be written out sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, several of my favorite characters from that series have died along the way.
And I’ve never heard of Among Others, but I’ll reserve a copy as soon as I have some room on my holds list.

I always thought killing off characters was a good way to keep the story going. After all, what point in rooting for someone if you know they will never die?
